Mark donated an autographed red Stratocaster to the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) charity program Katine: It Starts with a Village. That guitar was put on eBay and I was the lucky winner of that auction. I was subsequently invited to come by his studio at British Grove in London on January 23, 2009 to pick up the guitar and meet the man himself. How does one overcome the nervousness associated with meeting the person who has shaped the musical landscape in your life for over 20 years? Well, needless to say, I did not figure out the answer to that question before the meeting, but I needed not to worry as Mark made the whole experience so smooth and comfortable, far surpassing my expectations. I had walked into the building expecting to pick up the guitar, see Mark sign it and take a couple of pictures with him. Instead, Mark took his time with us, shared cappuccinos, played the guitar as only he can and gave us a full tour of his studio, making this trip an absolute wonder which I fondly remember every time I am in the same room as the red Strat.
